Does a leadership program for women in the social sector need a module on Understanding Gender? The answer to that might be another question-- Do fish know they live in water? Most people are drawn to the sector because they want to make meaningful change in society. Working on creating this change without an understanding of why things are the way they are has in many instances done more harm than good. For one year now, it has been the highlight of my working life to lead this session on Understanding Gender: Self & Society for the ILSS Emerging Women's Leadership Program. Each batch reinforces my belief in the power of a room full of people committed to making change. Thanks to Jasmine Saha, Shradha Roy, and Archana Ramachandran for giving me this space in their wonderful program and forever grateful to Sanymi Gupta. If she didn't coerce me into doing this, I would have never known this joy. Grateful to my ex boss Kamla Bhasin for letting me absorb her seamless gender trainings and my ex-colleague Ditilekha (He/They) for their handbook Understanding Gender Beyond the Binaries published by The YP Foundation (an excellent resource to unpack gender basics) which shapes a lot of content in the session.Special thanks are due to Karan Johar for making easy work of unpacking complex gender norms :DILSS - India Leaders for Social Sector

Women have greater representation in leadership roles within gender-stereotyped industries like healthcare and education. However, there remains a lack of women leaders in important industries like finance and technology. Bossy or assertive? How gender bias is impacting female leaders. The article discusses the persistent challenges women face in achieving equality in the workplace, despite some progress. It highlights how traditional gender expectations penalize women who display assertiveness and leadership qualities, labeling them as "bossy" or "unlikeable." This bias is reflected in performance reviews and societal perceptions. The article offers strategies for female leaders to navigate these challenges, such as being concise yet confident in communication, using value phrases to justify assertiveness, adopting subtly dominant gestures, and keeping speech succinct. Ultimately, it calls for redefining stereotypes and supporting women in leadership roles.#genderequality #stereotypeshttps://lnkd.in/dBgYvK6u
