Before you contact Lenovo

Prepare the needed information before you contact Lenovo.

  1. Record the problem symptoms and details:
    • What is the problem? Is it continuous or intermittent?
    • Any error message or error code?
    • What operating system are you using? Which version?
    • Which software applications were running at the time of the problem?
    • Can the problem be reproduced? If so, how?
  2. Record the system information:
    • Product name.
    • Machine type and “serial number”.

Services available during the warranty period

  • Problem determination - Trained personnel are available to assist you with determining ifyou have a hardware problem and deciding what action is necessary to fix the problem.
  • Lenovo hardware repair - If the problem is determined to be caused by Lenovo hardware underwarranty, trained service personnel are available to provide the applicable level ofservice.
  • Engineering change management - Occasionally, there might be changes that are required aftera product has been sold. Lenovo or your reseller, if authorized by Lenovo, will makeselected Engineering Changes (ECs) that apply to your hardware available.

Services not covered

  • Replacement or use of parts not manufactured for or by Lenovo or nonwarranted parts
  • Identification of software problem sources
  • Configuration of UEFI BIOS as part of an installation or upgrade

Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) are parts that can be replaced by the customer. The computerscontain the following types of CRUs:

  • Self-service CRUs: Refer to parts that can be replaced easily by customerthemselves or by trained service technicians at an additional cost.
  • Optional-service CRUs: Refer to parts that can be replaced by customerswith a greater skill level. Trained service technicians can also provide service to replacethe parts under the type of warranty designated for the customer’s machine.

If you intend on installing a CRU, Lenovo will ship the CRU to you. CRU information andreplacement instructions are shipped with your product and are available from Lenovo at any timeupon request. You might be required to return the defective part that is replaced by the CRU.When return is required: (1) return instructions, a prepaid shipping label, and a container willbe included with the replacement CRU; and (2) you might be charged for the replacement CRU ifLenovo does not receive the defective CRU within thirty (30) days of your receipt of thereplacement CRU. Replacement of any parts not listed above should be done by a qualified repairtechnician or by ensuring that you carefully follow all instructions provided by Lenovo. Youcan also find Lenovo-authorized repair facilities by going to Find A Lenovo Service Provider formoreinformation.

Disable Fast Startup and the built-in battery

Before replacing any CRU, ensure that you disable Fast Startup first and then disable thebuilt-in battery.

To disable Fast Startup:

Step 1

Go to Control Panel and view by Large icons or Smallicons.

Step 2

Click Power Options, and then click Choosewhat the power buttons do on the left pane.

Step 3

Click Change settings that are currently unavailableat the top.

Step 4

If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), click Yes.

Step 5

Clear the Turn on fast startup check box, and thenclick Save changes.

To disable the built-in battery:

Step 1

Restart your computer. When the logo screen is displayed, immediatelypress F1 to enter the UEFI BIOS menu.

Step 2

Select Config ➙ Power. The Powersubmenu is displayed.

Step 3

Select Disable Built-in Battery and press Enter.

Replace a CRU

Follow the instructions to replace a CRU.

Base cover assembly

Follow the instructions to replace the base cover assembly.

Before you start, read Generic Safetyand Compliance Notices and print the following instructions.

Do not remove the base cover assembly in the following situations. Otherwise,there might be a risk of short circuits.

  • When your computer has the removable battery installed
  • When your computer is connected to ac power

For access, do the following:

  1. Disable Fast Start up and the built-in battery. See DisableFast Startup and the built-in battery.
  2. Turn off the computer and disconnect the computer from ac power and all connectedcables.
  3. Close the computer display and turn over the computer.

If the computer does not start up after you reinstall the base cover assembly,disconnect the acpower adapter and then reconnect it to the computer.

Built-in battery

Follow the instructions to replace the built-in battery.

DANGER
Use only the Lenovo-authorized battery specified for the computer. Any otherbattery couldignite orexplode.

Important notices for replacing a battery

Lenovo has no responsibility for the performance or safety of unauthorizedbatteries, andprovides no warranties for failures or damage arising out of their use.

The Vantage app provides an automatic battery diagnostic test that determines if thebuilt-inbattery isdefective. A built-in battery should not be replaced unless this diagnostic testshows that thebattery isdefective. The only exception to this is if the built-in battery is physicallydamaged or acustomer is reportinga possible safety issue.

If the Vantage app is not installed on the computer, the customer should downloadand installthe program todiagnose the built-in battery, before replacing a non-physically damaged built-inbattery. Notethat thereplacement of a physically damaged built-in battery is not covered by the warranty.

For access, do the following:

  1. Disable Fast Start up and the built-in battery. See Disable FastStartup and the built-in battery.
  2. Turn off the computer and disconnect the computer from ac power and allconnected cables.
  3. Close the computer display and turn over the computer.
  4. Remove the base cover assembly. See Base coverassembly.

Step 1

Remove the built-in battery as shown below.

  • Loosen the six captive screws.

Step 2

Install the built-in battery in reverse order.

CAUTION:
Before installing the built-in battery, thoroughly check the batterycompartment and ensure there are no foreign or sharp objects thatcould cause damage to the battery.

Ensure that the base cover assembly is secured in place. Otherwise, thebattery connection might fail.

CAMM2 top cover

Follow the instructions to replace the CAMM2 top cover.

Before you start, read Generic Safetyand Compliance Notices and print the following instructions.

For access, do the following:

  1. Disable Fast Startup and the built-in battery. See Disable FastStartup and the built-in battery.
  2. Turn off the computer and disconnect the computer from ac power and allconnected cables.
  3. Close the computer display and turn over the computer.

Remove the top cover as shown below. Ensure you loosen screws inalphabetical order.

When removing the top cover, ensure you lift itvertically as shownbelow.

Step 2

Install the top cover as shown below.

Before installing, ensure the memory module compartment is freeof dust or contaminants.

  • Place the top cover on the CAMM2 memory module.

  • Tighten the three captive screws twice in the order as shownbelow. To preventscrews fromloosing, ensure you tighten screws twice.

When tightening the screws:

  • Use the correct type of Phillips-head screwdriver(#PH1).
  • Press down the screwdriver with your palm to prevent thescrewdriver fromcomingoff.Otherwise, it might cause screw stripping.

Troubleshooting

  • Memory module replacement might cause memory retraining. For details,see “Detect memory retraining (for Intel models only)” in PDF version.
  • If the computer does not start up after replacement, check whether thethree captive screwsof the top cover are tightened firmly. If not, tighten screws firmly.Boot failure might notoccur immediately after the replacement if screws are not tightenedcorrectly.

CAMM2 memory module

Follow the instructions to replace the CAMM2 memory module.

Before you start, read GenericSafetyand Compliance Notices and print the following instructions.

Do not touch the contact area of the memory module. Touch only the edgeof the memorymodule.

  • If the computer does not start up after replacement, checkwhether the three captive screwsof the topcover are tightened firmly. If not, tighten screws firmly. Bootfailure might not occurimmediately after thereplacement if screws are not tightened correctly.

M.2 solid-state-drive and M.2 solid-state drivebracket

Follow the instructions to replace the M.2 solid-state-drive and M.2solid-state drive bracket.

Before you start, read GenericSafetyand Compliance Notices and print the following instructions.

  • If you replace a M.2 solid-state drive, you might need toinstall a new operatingsystem.For details on how to install a new operating system, see“Install a Windows operating system and drivers” in PDF version.
  • If your computer is installed with the color profiles, youneed to reinstall the colorprofiles after installing a new operating system, see “Usethe factory color calibration feature (for selected models)” in PDF version.

The M.2 solid-state drive is sensitive. Inappropriate handling mightcause damage and permanentloss of data.

When handling the M.2 solid-state drive, observe the followingguidelines:

  • Replace the M.2 solid-state drive only for repair. The M.2solid-state drive is not designedfor frequent changes or replacement.
  • Before replacing the M.2 solid-state drive, make a backup copyof all the data that you wantto keep.
  • Do not apply pressure to the M.2 solid-state drive.
  • Do not touch the contact edge or circuit board of the M.2solid-state drive. Otherwise, theM.2 solid-state drive might get damaged.
  • Do not subject the M.2 solid-state drive to physical shocks orvibration. Put the M.2solid-state drive on a soft material, such as cloth, to absorbphysical shocks.

Depending on the model, your computer might have twoM.2-solid-state-drive slots. When youconfigure the M.2-solid-state-drive slot in the UEFI BIOS menu,ensure that you select thecorrect menu item.

  • Slot a: NVMe0
  • Slot b: NVMe1

Special notices for M.2 solid-state-drive thermalpad

Before you replace a M.2 solid-state drive, observe the followingtips to ensure you use theproper thermal pad:

  • To replace a single-sided M.2 solid-state drive with adual-sided M.2 solid-state drive,ensure that you replace the thick thermal pad (thickness: 2.25mm) with a thin thermal pad(thickness: 0.8 mm) in section 1 (thesection far fromthe M.2 solid-state drive slot).
  • To replace a dual-sided M.2 solid-state drive with asingle-sided M.2 solid-state drive,ensure that you replace the thin thermal pad (thickness: 0.8mm) with a thick thermal pad(thickness: 2.25 mm) in section 1 (thesection far fromthe M.2 solid-state drive slot).
  • For dual-sided M.2 solid-state drive, ensure that you use a thinthermal pad (thickness:0.8 mm) in section 1.
  • For single-sided M.2 solid-state drive, ensure that you use athick thermal pad (thickness:2.25 mm) in section 1.

For access, do the following:

  1. Disable Fast Start up and the built-in battery. See DisableFast Startup and the built-inbattery.
  2. Turn off the computer and disconnect the computer from ac powerand all connected cables.
  3. Close the computer display and turn over the computer.
  4. Remove the base cover assembly. See Basecover assembly.

For Lenovo supported M.2 solid-state drive Gen 4,only 4 TB models aredual-sided. Other modelsare single-sided.

Speaker assembly
