GONTER State Rep. Peter V. Kocot announced yesterday that several area communities and school districts will receive "pothole money" to help pay for schools. The Legislature approved $5.5 million for the Foundation Reserve Program, commonly known as "pothole money," Kocot said. Communities and school districts with "extraordinary expenses" applied to the state Department of Education, which made final decisions about which communities received money, said Kocot, D- Northampton.

Two of the largest area recipients will be the Huntington-based Gateway Regional School District, which got $130,000, and the Bucklandbased Mohawk Regional School District, which got $200,000. Both received money under a category for districts in rural areas with declining enrollment. Gateway and Mohawk were both included in a proposal made by Mohawk Superintendent Michael A. Buoniconti that would have provided aid to 18 regional school districts suffering from declining enrollment. For example, Mohawk's enrollment has declined 22 percent in the last five years.

However, that Legislation was not approved. Other communities benefit-. ing from the "pothole" money include Chesterfield, $10,000, and Montgomery, $8,000, both because of an "extraordinary increase in the minimum contribution" from the town to the school district. Greenfield got $41,000 and Westhampton-based Hampshire Regional $17,000, be-. cause they get assistance from local colleges and universities with programs for declining enrollment and dropout prevention, Kocot said.

Williamsburg got $5,000, Wendell got $25,000 and Belchertown got $34,000. 1 Carnival fun fills the day o1 qu grivo a By MARLA A. GOLDBERG SPRINGFIELD Sielmary A. Cruz, 8, was having a fine time on the Gray House lawn yesterday afternoon. At: a carnival run by 42 Western New England College students, Sielmary won the potato-sack race, and triumphed in a miniature bowling game.

"I'm going to go do bowling again," she said, racing off. Officials from the Gray House, a human service agency, and WNEC said they hope to make the carnival an annual event, and build a stronger relationship between the organizations. The WNEC students who ran games and made fruit kabobs and peanut butter sandwiches yesterday are trainees in a peer adviser program. Many said they were happy to volunteer. "This is awesome, the kids love it," said senior Michael J.

Shedlock. He became fast friends with Sielmary Cruz's brother, Miguel A. Cruz, 9, who admitted targeting Shedlock during a water balloon toss. "I wanted to get Mike, so he could get splashed," Miguel said. Gray House Executive Director Dena A.

Calvanese said the carnival was a treat for the 40 children in a summer program that ended on Aug. 3. "Hopefully the college students will have been taken by the kids, and want to volunteer in the after-school pro- gram," she said. WNEC service 'coordinator Rose E. Gage said she wanted students to experience community outreach, "rather than just talking about It's important for the students to do some work here in the North End," she said.

The Gray House, on Sheldon Street, is supported by donations from individuals, corporations, civic and religious groups. Its food pantry provides emergency food to more than 9,000 people a year, while an education support service includes tutoring. and GED diploma preparation. The Gray House also has a Kid's Club, which offers afterschool and summer programs for children ages 7 through 11. Activities include academic help, arts and crafts and sports.

The summer program provides breakfast and lunch, while the two-hour afterschool program, which runs Monday through Thursday, includes dinner. "It (the Gray House) becomes a safe place to be," Calvanese said. WNEC senior Sarah J. Shugrue, 21, president of Community Action Rewards, said everyone was glad to participate in the carnival, as did senior Erica M. Dodge, 22.

"A lot of people lose sight of how important community service is and it (the carnival) is turning out fantastic," Dodge said. Clerk accused of pulling gun LUDLOW A 43-year-old package store clerk, angered over vandalism to his parked vehicle, pointed an unloaded handgun on Sunday night at two juveniles he believed to be responsible, police said. Police said they believe Germano A. Andre, who works at the Four Seasons package Af 4 4L erty over $250 for smashing a window in Andre's vehicle.
