Major Leagues Mound, not hitters tough for the Eck By The Associated Press After watching his staff combine for two straight shutouts against the New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics manager Tony La Russa was faced with the possibility of a pitching problem. Dennis Eckersley entered the game in the ninth inning, but had to leave after striking out Don Slaught when he felt a twinge in his right shoulder.

Rick Honeycutt came on and got the last two outs to preserve a 3-0 victory for Curt Young in New York yesterday. "He flinched and felt a little something in his shoulder," La Russa said. "We've been in two straight series where the mound is really steep in the bullpen and flat on the field. I hope this is something that can be corrected." Eckersley, who had 45 saves last year, was two outs away from his 15th when he left the game. In the Athletics' clubhouse, Eckersley said he did not feel any pain in the shoulder.

"We're really not sure of the problem," La Russa said. "We'll either fly him back to Oakland or he'll see a doctor in Boston." La Russa said he would ask Oakland general manager Sandy Alderson to call the Yankees about the problem with the mounds. "All of the bullpen mounds should be the same as on the field," Oakland pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "We do it in Oakland. You're talking about valuable people." I'm sure I'll get another chance.

I'll be back out there somewhere down the line." He could be: back out there on Thursday, when the Red Sox play their annual exhibition game at Pawtucket against their farm club in the AAA International League. "Everybody who' needs work will get into that game," Morgan said. That would include Eric Hetzel, the young right-hander who has not been used since he was called up from Pawtucket to fill in when Wes Gardner went on the disabled list. "Hetzel probably won't get a start for a long time. We'll try to get him some work out of the Duncan said that Eckersley noticed the difference and altered.

his warmups once he entered the game. "He wanted to make an adjustment and didn't warmup from the stretch," Duncan said. "He said he put a strain on his arm and felt something funny in his shoulder." A spokesman for the Yankees said no other club had complained and the same person had been sloping the mounds for 10 years at the Stadium. "Losing both Eckersley and (Jose Canseco) is a potentially big problem," La Russa said. Canseco, who led the American League in homers and runs batted in last season, has been sidelined since the start of the season with a wrist injury.

Young, 2-4, allowed four hits in five innings. In two of Young's previous three starts, he did not last past the fourth inning. Gene Nelson followed three innings of one-hit relief and Eckersley came in to start the ninth. He faced two batters and left holding his right shoulder. Honeycutt finished for his second save.

"I think Tony took me out because I haven't exactly been rolling along," Young said. "They wanted me to leave on a positive note." Todd Burns, Honeycutt and Eric Plunk had combined for a one-hitter Friday night, facing the minimum 27 batters. The Yankees had Continued on Page C-11 pen," Morgan said. FENWAY FLIPS The Red Sox had only three doubleheaders last season. They swept Kansas City and Milwaukee at home, and got swept at Detroit.

The KC sweep marked the managerial debut of Morgan on July 15. He had been rained out of his first scheduled game after being named to replace the fired John McNamara on July 14. The Red Sox lineup for yesterday had Danny Heep in right field and Sam Horn at DH. Horn will stay in there for today, but Dwight Evans probably will be back in right field. He was out of yesterday's lineup just for a rest Dopson takes a 5-2 record into today's game, the best of any Boston pitcher Blyleven has a 10-14 lifetime record against the Red Sox.

His control has been excellent this spring. In nine starts, the veteran curveballer has yet to walk more than two The Oakland A's will follow the Angels into Fenway. Last time they were here, they won two in a row on their way to a sweep of the '88 AL playoffs. 1 2 7 4.
